Do You Know What Is The Edison Plug

Many times, we come across electrical terms like the Edison Plug or the Household Plug. Do you know what they are and where these plugs are used?

The Edison Plug is nothing but the NEMA 15-5 plug. NEMA stands for National Electrical Manufacturers Association. NEMA 15-5 is an electrical plug commonly used for connecting appliances and devices to a power outlet. The plug is identified by its two parallel flat blades, one wider than the other. Located below these blades is a round grounding pin. The circular pin ensures the appliance or device is safely grounded so the user doesn’t get an electrical shock.

The NEMA 15-5 plug is rated for 125 volts and up to 15 amps of electrical current. It can power appliances such as lamps, vacuum cleaners, and small kitchen appliances. An important point users must remember is that the NEMA 15-5 plug is suitable for use only with electrical outlets that have equivalent NEMA 15-5 receptacles. If you use this plug with any mismatched outlet, it can cause an electrical shock or damage to the appliance or device.

NEMA Connectors Types

Several types of NEMA connectors are available, each with specific features and applications.  The two primary classifications of NEMA connectors are locking connectors and non-locking connectors.

NEMA Locking Connectors

NEMA locking connectors are electrical connectors with a secure locking mechanism to ensure that they remain firmly connected to the power source. They are designed to meet the standards set by NEMA and are available in various sizes and configurations. NEMA locking connectors are generally used in industrial environments dealing with high currents, such as manufacturing units, data centers, and construction sites.

The locking mechanism helps prevent unintentional disconnection, which could result in electrical hazards or downtime in critical systems. To disconnect the connector, the lock must be released by twisting and pulling a collar.

The L5, L6, and L7 series Locking Connectors are used for low-voltage applications. The L15 and L21 series are recommended for high-voltage applications. Each series’s specific pin configuration and voltage rating must be matched to the connecting device for hassle-free and secure operation.

NEMA Non-Locking Connectors

NEMA non-locking connectors are devoid of a dedicated locking mechanism. They rely on pressure to maintain a secure connection. Non-locking connectors are used in applications with a low risk of accidental disconnection, such as residential and small business electrical systems. They are also commonly used in low-voltage application situations where the current flow is low and there is little risk of an electrical shock.

NEMA non-locking connectors include the 1-15, 5-15, and 6-15 series for general-purpose applications. The NEMA 14-30 and 14-50 series are used for high-power applications such as EV charging.

Grounded And Ungrounded Connectors

NEMA connectors are also classified as grounded or ungrounded connectors.

Grounded connectors have extra power that gets directed to the ground, away from the electrical appliances. It helps avoid power surges that could result in an electric shock or overload.

Ungrounded plugs come with two pins, while grounded plugs are fitted with an extra pin above the two to avoid metal objects from touching the hotline.

You must choose a NEMA non-locking connector with care. While purchasing one, take into account the voltage and current requirements and the environmental conditions in which the connector will be used. Connectors used outdoors may need gaskets, seals, or other weather-resistant features to protect against moisture and corrosion.

The other commonly used types of NEMA connectors are:

  • NEMA 1-15 is a two-pronged connector commonly used to run low-power devices such as lamps and clocks.
  • NEMA 5-15 is a three-pronged connector used for electrical appliances and devices with a higher power requirement than NEMA 1-15 connectors.
  • NEMA 6-15 is a three-pronged connector for high-power equipment such as air conditioners and industrial gadgets.
  • NEMA L5-30 is a three-pronged locking connector for running high-power applications such as generators and RVs.
  • NEMA L6-30 is used to power welding equipment and industrial machinery, whereas the NEMA L14-30 is used for running generators and backup power systems.

The Working of NEMA 5-15 Connector

As NEMA5-15 is one of the most commonly used connectors in the US, let’s take a closer look at how it works.

A NEMA 5-15 connector is used to connect devices needing a standard 120-volt alternating current (AC) power supply. They are ideal for use in household appliances and electronics. It comes with two flat blades parallel to each other and a circular pin for grounding. One blade is wider than the other to ensure plugging in the correct manner and ensuring efficiency and safety.

When inserted into a compatible socket, the two blades of the plug connect with the hot (black) and neutral (white) wires, thus completing the electrical circuit. The circular ground pin connects to the ground wire and provides a safety mechanism if there is a short circuit or any electrical malfunction.

Use NEMA 5-15 For the Right Voltage and Current Needs

It must be noted that NEMA 5-15 connector can handle a maximum voltage of 125 volts AC and a maximum current of 15 amps. It cannot be used with 240 volts AC, which requires a different type of connector with larger blades and a different configuration.

If you need to connect a device that requires 240 volts AC, choose a higher variation of NEMA like the NEMA 6-15 or NEMA 6-20 connector. They are specifically designed for higher voltages. Always remember to use the correct type of connector for your device’s voltage and current requirements to ensure safe and reliable operation.

If you are shopping for NEMA connectors, always choose the Duraline brand. Duraline is the leading manufacturer of a variety of high-quality electrical products, including cables, connectors, temporary lighting systems, spider assemblies, Y-adaptors, and more. NEMA 5-15 plugs are supplied on heavy-duty volt cables. You can also order weatherproof molded-to-cable NEMA 5-15 style products in any quantity at affordable prices.
