An Overview of the Most Common Types of Construction Vehicles

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 1/3 of construction workers are required to drive some sort of heavy machinery on the job.

But what are they driving? There are all kinds of types of construction vehicles, but some construction sites wouldn’t be complete without these most common ones.

Keep reading to find out what machines you need on your construction site.

Bulldozer

A bulldozer is one of the best construction vehicles for moving anything heavy. They have a unique track with a heavy front blade.

They also have strong engine power, which makes them great for digging trenches, reshaping and clearing land, moving large amounts of material, and even towing a heavy load over a short distance.

Boom Lift

A boom lift can lift workers and materials up to a construction site or any other area that might be difficult to reach. The lift normally has a platform attached to a hydraulic arm to move people around.

This helps a construction manager or worker reach utilities, exteriors, trees, and scaffolding and gives them painting access as well.

A boom lift has a longer reach than a scissor lift, which makes them great if you’re going to be working on something very high up.

There are three main types of boom lifts: an articulating boom lift, a bucket truck, or a telescopic boom lift.

Front Loader

The front loader is also sometimes referred to as a bucket loader. Like bulldozers, they’re earth-moving machines, but they’re higher off the ground.

These vehicles can be expensive, but you can actually find used compact track loaders for much cheaper as well. These loaders have a big, square bucket to transfer the material, and the front part is actually detachable as well.

Cranes

Cranes can be used to move and lift any heavy materials, and they’re common at almost every construction site. There are different types of cranes, and you can wheel them in to lift all of your materials.

Cranes are equipped to handle heavy loads and even transport them as high as 250 feet. They are normally attached to the ground, building, or other structures to help stabilize them.

Backhoe

A bulldozer is good if you want to push any heavy loads horizontally. But a backhoe is helpful if you need to move a heavy load vertically. This is one piece of construction equipment that you need to have in your fleet.

Backhoes can be used to remove stumps, move loose dirt and debris, dig trenches, lay pipes and cables, unload freight, and do even more.

Discover More Types of Construction Vehicles

These are only some of the most common types of construction vehicles, but there are many more of them out there that you’ll need to complete your construction project.

If you’re interested in learning more about construction vehicles, you’ve come to the right place.
