In the 13th century, Chania gained its present layout. In the following centuries, the city was fortified by the Venetians and was made the capital of the island. In 1971, the capital of the island of Crete was moved to Heraklion. Due to global health concerns, some businesses in the town may close. The old harbor is lined with seafood eateries and cafes. It is also enchanting at night.
