For the most part, every parent wants to do the best for their children after a divorce has taken place. Child support is not always the easiest part of the divorce to negotiate because there are so many factors involved in deciding how much child support will be needing to be paid and who will be the one paying for it. After the amount and the party has been determined for who is paying child support, it may not always be easy to afford it when you are the one needing to pay it.

Communicate with Your Former Spouse

When you are truly struggling to afford the child support amount, it might be worth it to talk with your former spouse about the issue. You will want to address that you are trying your best to provide all the support possible for your child or children but that you cannot afford that specific amount. Be cordial and honest about your situation. This may not always work but it’s worth a shot to communicate together before trying to take different legal action.

Request an Order Modification

If you have a disagreement with the child support order that was given, you can have the chance to have the order modified through the court systems. The Child Support Enforcement agency can assist you in getting this order modified if your circumstances have changed. If there has been a change in your circumstances, you will want your child support order to reflect your new situation and this order can help make that happen for you.

Create a Payment Schedule

You can also petition the courts to change the amount you owe in child support to a more manageable payment schedule due to your circumstances. This is more likely to be approved by the court systems when you are so determined to offer this financial support to your children but cannot make the necessary payments on the former order timeline. This payment schedule will allow for a little more flexibility of the payment times but will still ensure that your child is receiving the money that they need in their lives. This amount will need to be agreed upon by both parents in the situation and this process has different regulations in different states. But this way is worth a shot in gaining more time to pay child support.

Get Assistance From a Lawyer

While there are some parties who simply choose not to pay child support, there are some situations that include certain parents not being able to afford the child support amount for whatever reason. If this is the case for you, there are some ways that you can go about changing the amount and finding solutions so that you can better afford to pay it. A child support lawyer will also be able to point you in the right direction so that you can receive the fair help that you need in order to afford child support and provide the best possible outcome for your children through this time of divorce.
